This 28 lb 8 oz Ling won the RCBDSAF Trophy for the Best Specimen Fish— 2005

I have been sea angling since 1960 and have continued sea fishing since leaving Aberdeen in 1978. Since moving to Berkshire in 1988 I have been a Member of the Royal County of Berkshire Deep Sea Angling Federation since 2003.

The vast majority of my trips were booked on the charter boats out of Weymouth in Dorset, with occasionally others booked from Lymington and Langstone.

Weymouth is a wonderful port for inshore and offshore wreck fishing offering a massive variety of species. There are sand banks, rocky reef marks for drifting or anchoring, very deep water marks, shallow marks, fierce tidal areas, slack tidal areas and plenty of inshore wrecks. As the months change, the main Species change, so there is plenty of variety on offer right throughout the year and every trip can be different.

Weymouth has become the major port for the big competitions because the waters around Weymouth and area really offer everything for the novice or the experienced angler.

There are many shipwrecks off Weymouth and they continue to offer good fishing.

Conger fishing trips in the ‘Deep Hole’ can be a great success if you are lucky on the day with calm weather that allows fishing right through the tides. If no large Congers are caught you can have good sport catching Bull Huss, Tope and Bream instead. The ‘Deep Hole’ trips are a real challenge with 300 feet of water to fish and just 2 miles south of Portland Bill. Normally the tides are very strong, so the smallest tides of the year are the best and you should only require 2 lb of lead on 45 lb braid main line.

As the Blonde Ray trips are not very popular the Ray population is very healthy. On the occasional sessions that do take place, fishing can be excellent with numerous Rays being caught and many over the 20 lb mark.

Bream fishing starts in April and goes right through until late October as Weymouth has enjoyed a real revival of this species.  Bream trips from August to October are combined with Bass trips (or even Blonde Ray trips, fishing two extremes in one day with heavy tackle for the Blonde Rays and light for the Bream).

The Famous Shambles Bank south east of Weymouth is renowned for the Turbot and Brill fishing with  Brill of specimen size caught throughout the year.  Good sized Plaice feature on the Shambles Bank in the Spring, with plenty of fish over 4 lb being caught.  All the time new fishing areas are being found and pioneered with a great success.

Fishing in Alderney is excellent with the early months of April / May outstanding for Turbot fishing and the later months (end of August to October) being the best for Bass fishing plus plenty of Bream and, in mid September onwards, prolific Turbot fishing again. The middle months include Tope, Pollack and plenty of wreck fishing plus some good Bass trips on the spring tides.
